Indoor air quality and humidity control

Indoor air quality gets sold as gadgets. Here it is mostly moisture. Hold a house between 45 and 55 percent relative humidity and most of the problems people buy devices for — musty smell, biological growth, dust mites, that clammy feeling at 74 degrees — lose their fuel.

What actually moves the needle

  • Correct sizing and longer run times, so the system dehumidifies instead of short-cycling
  • A whole-home dehumidifier where the air conditioning alone cannot hold humidity in shoulder season
  • Real filtration, matched to your blower rather than the thickest filter that fits
  • Sealing duct leaks and crawlspace infiltration, which is where a lot of humidity arrives
  • Keeping the coil and drain clean, because a wet dirty coil is a biological growth site

On MERV ratings

A higher MERV number is not automatically better. Push a filter too restrictive for your blower and you lose airflow, which costs capacity and can freeze a coil. We match filtration to the equipment you have, and record your filter sizes so reordering is simple.

“Our AC stopped working around noon, and with temperatures already over 90 degrees, we knew we needed help fast… They had Chris at our home within an hour of our call… we signed up for their twice-yearly maintenance plan before Chris left.”

“Very transparent. Explained all my required repairs and provided a per repair breakdown for full consideration… Don't get ripped off, call these guys first.”

Kellie C. · Google

“After returning home from a trip, I walked into a hot house and realized my AC wasn't working. Even with everything he had going on, he took the time on a weekend to walk me through the troubleshooting process.”

Questions about indoor air quality

What humidity should I keep the house at?

Between 45 and 55 percent is the target for comfort and for keeping growth down. Above 60 percent for long stretches is where coastal homes get into trouble.

Do UV lights work?

They have a narrow, real use at the coil, and they are not a substitute for a clean coil, a clear drain and controlled humidity. We would rather fix the cause than light it.
