Zone control systems

Heat stacks upstairs. A single thermostat in a downstairs hallway means the upstairs is hot all summer and the downstairs is cold all winter, and whoever controls the thermostat wins. Zoning splits the system into areas with their own thermostats and dampers so each one gets what it asks for.

Good candidates for zoning

  • Two-story homes on one system
  • Houses with a large west-facing glass exposure that cooks after 3pm
  • Bonus rooms and additions on a shared system
  • Households that argue about the thermostat, which is most of them

Doing it correctly

Zoning done badly is loud and hard on equipment: closing too much of a duct system raises static pressure and strains the blower. It needs correct damper sizing, bypass or variable-speed equipment that can handle reduced airflow, and controls set up for the house. We size the whole picture before we sell you dampers.

“Our AC stopped working around noon, and with temperatures already over 90 degrees, we knew we needed help fast… They had Chris at our home within an hour of our call… we signed up for their twice-yearly maintenance plan before Chris left.”

“Very transparent. Explained all my required repairs and provided a per repair breakdown for full consideration… Don't get ripped off, call these guys first.”

Kellie C. · Google

“After returning home from a trip, I walked into a hot house and realized my AC wasn't working. Even with everything he had going on, he took the time on a weekend to walk me through the troubleshooting process.”

Questions about zone control

Can my existing system be zoned?

Often yes, depending on the duct layout and the blower. We look at the duct system and static pressure first, because the ductwork decides what is possible.
